Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea glabra

Nothing gives more colour per rupee in a Pakistani garden. Bougainvillea will cover a boundary wall, a car porch or a pergola in solid colour, flower for eight months of the year, and do it on almost no water once established.

The trick almost everyone gets wrong is kindness. Bougainvillea flowers when it is slightly stressed. Rich soil, frequent watering and a nitrogen feed will give you a large, healthy, entirely green plant. Keep it lean, let it dry between waterings, and you get colour.

  • Available in magenta, purple, orange, red and white
  • Flowers eight months of the year in the Pakistani plains
  • Grow it lean and dry — rich, wet soil produces leaves, not colour

How to look after your Bougainvillea

Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.

Light
Full, unfiltered sun. Anything less and you get a green shrub instead of colour.
Water
Sparingly. Bougainvillea flowers hardest when slightly stressed — let it approach wilting, then water deeply. Constant moisture produces leaves and nothing else.
Humidity
Low is preferred. It thrives in dry heat.
Soil
Poor to average, sharply drained soil. Rich soil actively reduces flowering.
Feeding
Low nitrogen, high potassium, every 4 weeks in the growing season.
Temperature
18–48°C. One of the toughest plants for a Pakistani summer. Protect from hard frost.

If something goes wrong

Vigorous green growth, no bracts

Why it happens: Too much water and too much nitrogen.

What to do: Cut watering back sharply and switch to a bloom feed. Colour usually follows within a month.

Leaf drop after repotting

Why it happens: Root disturbance — bougainvillea has famously brittle roots.

What to do: Keep it in one place, water lightly, and wait. It recovers.
