Growing since 2019

A working nursery, not a warehouse

Bhatti Plants Traders started with one shade house and a rooftop full of adenium seedlings. It is now a few hundred benches, eight people, and about a thousand plants leaving every month — but the way we work has not really changed.

Why we stopped buying stock in

In the first two years we did what most nurseries here do — bought in from larger growers and sold on. It worked commercially and it was miserable. We had no idea what a plant had been through before it reached us, so we could not tell a customer anything useful about it, and we could not stand behind it when it failed.

So we stopped. Now everything is propagated or grown on here for at least a season before it is listed. Adeniums are seed-raised in full rooftop sun for three years. Sansevieria divisions come off mother clumps we have kept for a decade. Avocados are grafted onto our own seedling rootstock and grown to two, four or six feet.

It means we list 131 varieties rather than a thousand, and it means some things are simply unavailable for months at a time. We think that is the right trade.

How we work

Four things we will not compromise on

01

We grow what we sell

Not a single plant on this site is drop-shipped. Every one was potted here, grown on here, and photographed here. When a listing says four in stock, there are four plants standing on a bench forty metres from where this was written.

02

Hardened, not forced

A lot of nursery stock is pushed hard under glass with heavy feeding to reach saleable size quickly. It looks superb in the photograph and collapses a fortnight after it gets home. Ours grow outdoors under shade cloth, slower, with thicker leaves and stronger stems.

03

Honest about difficulty

We mark calatheas and gardenias as difficult because they are, and we will talk you out of one if your conditions are wrong. A plant that dies in three weeks is not a sale, it is a customer we have lost.

04

The road is the hard part

Lahore to Karachi is 1,200 km and two days in a truck. Most of what we have learned in seven years is about packing — bagging root balls, sleeving foliage, bracing pots so nothing shifts. It is why our replacement rate is under two percent.

Packing

Seven years of learning how not to break things

A plant that survives our nursery still has to survive the journey. This is what every order goes through before it leaves:

  1. Root ball bagged and tied so the mix cannot escape and the roots stay moist for four days.
  2. Foliage sleeved in perforated wrap — protects the leaves without trapping condensation against them.
  3. Pot braced inside the carton with shredded card so nothing shifts or tips in transit.
  4. Anything over three feet travels in a purpose-built wooden frame rather than a box.
  5. A care card printed for that specific plant goes in the top of every carton.

“People ask why we bother growing everything ourselves when buying in is easier and the margin is better. The answer is that I want to be able to pick up the phone, hear a problem, and know exactly what that plant has been through — because I was there when it was potted.”
