Variegated Fern
Pteris cretica ‘Albolineata’
The variegated brake fern has slim, upright, forking fronds with a crisp white band running down the centre of each leaflet. It is far more delicate and graphic than a Boston fern, and considerably better behaved in a pot.
It is also a little more tolerant of ordinary indoor humidity than most ferns, though it will still resent a dry, air-conditioned room. A shaded bathroom or a north-facing sill suits it well.

How to look after your Variegated Fern
Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.
- Light
- Bright shade or filtered light only. Direct sun burns fronds in a single afternoon.
- Water
- Keep evenly moist — never soggy, never bone dry. In summer this often means checking every second day.
- Humidity
- High, 60%+. Ferns are the one group where a bathroom or kitchen genuinely helps.
- Soil
- Rich, moisture-retentive mix with good structure — compost, coco peat and a little perlite.
- Feeding
- Half-strength balanced feed monthly through the growing season.
- Temperature
- 16–28°C. Struggles above 35°C unless humidity is high and it is well shaded.
If something goes wrong
Fronds browning from the tips inward
Why it happens: Air too dry.
What to do: Raise humidity with a pebble tray or a nearby humidifier. Trim brown tips for appearance.
Whole fronds going brown and crisp
Why it happens: The rootball dried out completely.
What to do: Stand the pot in water for 20 minutes to rehydrate, cut the dead fronds, and keep evenly moist thereafter.
