Rosemary
Salvia rosmarinus
Rosemary is the herb best suited to Pakistani conditions — it comes from the dry Mediterranean, wants poor soil and full sun, and actively suffers from the rich compost and frequent watering most herbs are given here.
Grown properly it becomes a woody evergreen shrub that lives for years, flowers pale blue in spring, and gives you as much as you can use. Plant it in a terracotta pot in gritty soil and water only when the pot feels light.
- Better suited to Pakistani heat than basil, coriander or mint
- Becomes a permanent woody shrub rather than an annual
- Wants poor soil and infrequent water — do not over-feed it
Inclusive of pot and mix. Delivery Rs 350, free over Rs 5,000.

How to look after your Rosemary
Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.
- Light
- Sun to partial shade. In the hottest months, afternoon shade keeps colour better.
- Water
- Keep evenly moist while establishing, then water when the top few centimetres dry.
- Humidity
- Ambient.
- Soil
- Any reasonable garden soil with drainage.
- Feeding
- Light feed in spring. Over-feeding causes soft growth that flops.
- Temperature
- 10–40°C.
If something goes wrong
Bare, woody centre with growth only at the edges
Why it happens: Age.
What to do: Cut back hard in spring, or lift and replant the vigorous outer sections.
Grey mould in dense patches
Why it happens: Poor airflow in humid weather.
What to do: Thin the planting and avoid overhead watering.
