Lucky Bamboo
Dracaena sanderiana
Not actually bamboo — it is a dracaena — but it does the one thing no real bamboo will: grow happily and indefinitely in a glass of water on a desk. The spiralled stalks are trained by rotating young plants against a light source over many months, which is why they cost what they do.
Arrangements are counted deliberately: three stalks for happiness, five for wealth, eight for prosperity, and twenty-one for a comprehensive blessing. We can arrange any count you ask for.

How to look after your Lucky Bamboo
Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.
- Light
- Bright indirect light. Direct sun yellows the stalks quickly.
- Water
- In water: keep stalks submerged 5 cm and change the water every 2 weeks. In soil: keep consistently moist.
- Humidity
- Moderate to high.
- Soil
- Grows in water with pebbles, or in a well-draining potting mix. Both work — pick one and stay with it.
- Feeding
- A single drop of dilute liquid feed each time you change the water. No more.
- Temperature
- 18–32°C. Keep away from cold glass in winter.
If something goes wrong
Yellow stalks
Why it happens: Chlorinated tap water or too much light.
What to do: Use filtered or rested water, and move out of direct sun. Yellow stalks do not recover — remove them.
Cloudy, smelly water
Why it happens: Water not changed often enough.
What to do: Rinse the pebbles and the roots, and change water fortnightly.
