Zamioculcas zamiifolia
The ZZ stores water in fat underground rhizomes, which is why it survives conditions that finish almost everything else — dim offices, month-long trips, air conditioning that runs all day. The leaves are so glossy that people regularly assume it is artificial.
The only reliable way to kill one is to water it on a schedule. Water it when you remember, which for most people is about right, and it will be with you for a decade.

How to look after your ZZ Plant
Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.
- Light
- Tolerates low light better than almost any other houseplant, but grows noticeably faster in bright indirect light.
- Water
- Every 3–4 weeks. The underground rhizomes store water, so a forgotten ZZ is a healthy ZZ.
- Humidity
- Indifferent. Thrives in dry rooms.
- Soil
- Free-draining mix with plenty of perlite. Rhizomes rot in soggy soil.
- Feeding
- Once in spring, once in late summer. That is all it needs.
- Temperature
- 16–32°C. Keep above 12°C in winter.
If something goes wrong
Yellowing stems collapsing at the base
Why it happens: Overwatering.
What to do: Stop watering entirely for a month. Check rhizomes for softness and remove any that have gone soft.
Leaves dropping off intact
Why it happens: Sudden cold or a draught.
What to do: Move away from the window or door. New growth resumes in spring.
