Strelitzia nicolai
Strelitzia nicolai is grown for its size rather than its flower. It builds a clumping, multi-stemmed trunk carrying enormous banana-like leaves up to six metres, and the white-and-blue flowers, when they come, sit high in the crown.
Indoors, in a very bright corner with a high ceiling, it is one of the most impressive plants you can own. Outdoors in a courtyard it gives genuine tropical scale within a few seasons.

How to look after your White Bird of Paradise
Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.
- Light
- Bright light with several hours of direct sun. Indoors, the brightest window in the house.
- Water
- Weekly in summer, every 2–3 weeks in winter. Likes moisture but not standing water.
- Humidity
- Moderate to high. Leaf splitting is normal and structural — not a fault.
- Soil
- Rich, well-draining loam.
- Feeding
- Balanced feed fortnightly in spring and summer; a high-phosphorus feed encourages flowering in mature plants.
- Temperature
- 18–35°C. Protect below 10°C.
If something goes wrong
Leaves splitting along the ribs
Why it happens: Natural adaptation to wind, not damage.
What to do: Nothing to fix. Reduce airflow if you prefer whole leaves.
No flowers on a plant several years old
Why it happens: Insufficient light, or a pot that is too large.
What to do: These flower best slightly root-bound and in strong light. Give it more sun before a bigger pot.
