Black Raven ZZ
Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’
Raven is one of the genuinely striking plant introductions of the last decade. New stems push out a vivid apple green and, over about six weeks, darken through olive to a deep purple-black that reads as pure black in most indoor light. A mature plant carries both at once.
It is exactly as tough as an ordinary ZZ — same rhizomes, same drought tolerance, same indifference to low light. The only difference is the price, which reflects how slowly it propagates.

How to look after your Black Raven ZZ
Written for Pakistani conditions — long hot summers, dry winter air, and hard tap water. Follow this rather than advice written for a temperate climate.
- Light
- Tolerates low light better than almost any other houseplant, but grows noticeably faster in bright indirect light.
- Water
- Every 3–4 weeks. The underground rhizomes store water, so a forgotten ZZ is a healthy ZZ.
- Humidity
- Indifferent. Thrives in dry rooms.
- Soil
- Free-draining mix with plenty of perlite. Rhizomes rot in soggy soil.
- Feeding
- Once in spring, once in late summer. That is all it needs.
- Temperature
- 16–32°C. Keep above 12°C in winter.
If something goes wrong
Yellowing stems collapsing at the base
Why it happens: Overwatering.
What to do: Stop watering entirely for a month. Check rhizomes for softness and remove any that have gone soft.
Leaves dropping off intact
Why it happens: Sudden cold or a draught.
What to do: Move away from the window or door. New growth resumes in spring.
